i am desperately in search of a horizontal exhibit format.

left to right instead of up and down.

if anyone knows how to make one and is willing to share it with me, i would be extremely grateful.

i know there is supposed to be one in the next big upgrade but i cant wait anymore! :)

help!

mdominguezjr, Tomorrow,

I am planning on releasing such a template, but I need to make it work with the basic indexhibit install (which could be then customized by the user via CSS and so on). For now my template is customized for a -heavily modified - website so I can't just release it like that...

One thing I am wondering - and I would like to get the opinion of the forum users on that - is if this exhibit format would just make the content space scrollable horizontally and keep the menu as is (vertical), or will it be combined with a different menu layout (probably horizontal at the top or bottom of the page...).

In the later, to what extent a new custom menu is required or just repositioning the actual menu via CSS...

A quick visual mockup (put on your server and link here) of what you visualize would help me make some choices and please as much people as possible I hope.

*EDIT

I've just checked Tomorrow's friend Mattb's page. Would that be a sufficient solution to this 'horizontal exhibit format'?

I would be curious what people think a horizontal template should look like? Show me...

i mean... i like matt's site. and i think that its pretty functional. i do worry what will happen once he has exhibits that go "below the fold" and you will have to scroll in both directions. i think that might be too much.

but a menu that goes all the way across the top, while it sounds pretty cool... sounds like trouble in the functionality department. but what do i know?

i also like matt's site where the menu stays static and the images scroll behind. if i could do it similarly i would.

i picture it like 'over and over' except going left to right.

tomorrow, yeah i am from philly. live in fishtown, i dont think we have ever met personally but have similar acquaintances. my name is manny. my friend meredith grant (who now lives in chicago) took a photo of you when she was at uarts.

oh and here is another site that seems to have a very similar format to indexhibit that seems like the way a horizontal format should look.

Tomorrow,

I think that vertical scrolling should be "disabled" in this kind of layout... if some content does extend bellow the visible region (or if a user resizes the window) it should only be visually "cropped" or whatever we would call this and no vertical scroll bar should appear ( the designer should also take care of making images that fit in a decent sized window).

I will try to output one of the solutions quickly and we can work from that I guess.

one last tiny detail is with the horizontal scroll-bar... I tend to think it should sit at the bottom of the window, but in the example provided by mdominguezjr it floats at the bottom of the content...

I will go with what I believe is better, but would be happy to have some confirmation/counter argument on this.

Why did I have all of this mixed up with a different kind of navigation?

Yeah, there are tons of formats like that around...it would be cool if somebody would share there work back with the community. I've built a couple myself as well...but they aren't for sharing as they are client work.

Here it is: Crabs on a beach (Ok, I could have done better for the naming part)

Hopefully, the new horizontal Exhibition Format for Indexhibit.

You can get it over here:

Make it 31 ;)

I've pushed a minor update of Crabs on a beach - 1.0.1.

-Simplified the styles to make it more 'indexhibit vanilla style'
-Added a bit more padding between the images
-Cleaned up the comments

Of course, all that so that you can have a blank slate to do your own styling!

You can see a preview of what it looks like by following the link in my previous post. A download link is provided on that page

I'm still wide open to feedback so that hopefully this might be considered as a useful basic format and included in the core of indexhibit in future releases (wink wink to Vaska). Don't be afraid to be picky and point out details to polish it.

I also want to give it a more general name. exhibit.horizontal will probably do, but any other - not out-of-space - name suggestions?

Yeah, I though about crabwalk too... but if you make a quick search you'll also find it's usage in the English slang is far from fitting... Maybe I think too much... crabwalk sounds nice.
