New Indexhibit demo

Vaska A / 2012-05-01 15:42:24

Here is a preview of new Indexhibit. We have disabled some features completely and some inputs. There are still some bugs and translation issues to resolve, but this is more or less what will be released next week. We hope you find it useful:

Site: http://two.indexhibit.org/
CMS: http://two.indexhibit.org/ndxzstudio/

Play well.

Vaska A / 2012-05-01 16:23:35

"New". That's awesome. ;)

Vaska A / 2012-05-01 16:43:28

Yeah, I'm surprised people figured out how that worked so quickly. Once you see it, it's lovely and it makes sense. I think...

nklsrlwn / 2012-05-01 16:43:32

And happy Workers Day!

miss_debbie / 2012-05-01 19:09:32

Hey, looks very good!!
Thank you, Vaska.

louisbullock / 2012-05-01 19:14:52

OH MY GOD.

Vaska, you have truly outdone yourself, this is 10x greater than the previous version!

It has everything I've wanted, you've listened to the people, and given them what they want!

Finally tags and sections are a breeze! And caching! And formats! I am heavily impressed, this is amazing!

I'm really looking forward to the release next week, this has been worth the wait!

Outstanding effort!

Joel_Krause / 2012-05-01 21:57:11

Omg, that's awesome. I want it even more now. >.>

bipster / 2012-05-02 00:28:54

The demo looks great!

Just one question, Vaska. Will we be able to create nested exhibitions in the menu? ie:

- Exhibition
-- Part1
-- Part2
-- Part3

Thanks in advance

Sasz / 2012-05-02 01:09:08

Hi!
Looks very promising.
Is it going to be no-database version?
Will the new release have more basic formats, like slideshow for instance?
Thanks!

jsiegel / 2012-05-02 01:11:22

Looks wonderful, the new admin section is great! I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm excited for the release.

Thank you!

caferoyalbooks / 2012-05-02 01:37:07

looks a nice update
Is image uploading disabled - errors 'this image is too big'
multi users will be handy I think
Looking forward to seeing the shop / blog elements

good stuff, thanks

pernin / 2012-05-02 02:12:20

@caferoyal:
It's one of the features that's been disabled/nerfed in the demo: allowing so many people to upload images larger than 50 kB could bring the server to its knees in no time

As a feature of Indexhibit v2, uploading images larger than a certain size has been disabled. The cap is at 200 kB. Still, if you really need to upload images larger than that, this can be changed by the user

@Sasz:
There will be basic selection of formats and themes in the standard release (more than in the demo, and people will be able to adapt, customize, create new formats/themes, etc. just like in the old indexhibit

no database? there's a mysql database behind, yes. There are many differences with old indexhibit, and more than quite a few under the hood, but we hope it's still recognizable ;)

All CMS systems need a database to be able to create html pages dynamically, that's where all user created information is stored, except for media (images, video, sound) which are saved in the server as files.

lemathieu A / 2012-05-02 02:49:30

We like that people like it ;)

fabio / 2012-05-02 03:06:22

Thank you all! Great work!

Washy21 / 2012-05-02 03:07:25

This is very very good. Many thanks for the hard work that has gone into this.

matthewoliver / 2012-05-02 05:38:05

Good work guys, it looks very promising. Dying to try it ;-)

Sasz / 2012-05-02 05:41:22

@pernin: my wrong question )
I mean is it going to be easy to customize offline?

pernin / 2012-05-02 05:50:58

you mean wholly offline as in a M/W/L/AMP installation? I don't know, haven't tried. Certainly not more difficult than the old one

If what you want to do is edit php, javscript and css, and test online, this new version is even easier. Have a look at assets in Admin. You won't be able to save changes in the demo, but that's how it's meant to work in the release version

Sasz / 2012-05-02 06:37:51

@pernin: I mean that it'd be good to be able to customize and run website offline, and only when you're sure — publish it. I definitely don't know about M/W/L/AMP ) But anyway, I'm sure we will see it soon.

pernin / 2012-05-02 06:45:12

MAMP (Mac), WAMP (Windows), LAMP (Linux) are local server installations (you have your own server in your computer) usually for development locally so you don't have to be connected to the 'net all the time. What I can say is they can be very fiddly...

As you can see in the demo, v2 now comes with password protection: for the whole site (disabled in the demo), a whole section or individual pages, so that maybe what you're asking about 'offline'?

Sasz / 2012-05-02 07:07:31

@pernin: It's rather about the whole website modification, not only the certain page (then you can hide it). I mean when your website is in /Library/WebServer folder (mac). When it's done, you just copy and paste it on server. It would be useful.
Sorry, I should start anther thread for this. I see that I confusing some basic things. Thanks!

pernin / 2012-05-02 07:15:28

now you can put a password on the whole site, even online, if you don't have the password you can't see it

Mizake / 2012-05-02 07:29:34

Great work guys! :-)

Maybe it's a silly question, but... what will happen to the old (customized) exhibits? Will they still work on the new platform?

pernin / 2012-05-02 07:40:41

there's no way to do an 'automatic' upgrade for customizations, as each customized exhibit is, per definition, different, But there'll be clear instructions on how to do it manually.

Anyway, I'd never do an upgrade without having the site (files and database) backed up ;)

Sasz / 2012-05-02 07:43:32

@pernin: So it means to "close" an existing one for that period.

Sasz / 2012-05-02 07:45:16

if I put a password on the whole site

Vaska A / 2012-05-02 08:29:13

Just one question, Vaska. Will we be able to create nested exhibitions in the menu? ie:

I'm not sure what this means? Do you mean styling it so they are nested - that's just CSS - very simple.

Subsections will happen soon but probably not at launch - it's not 100% solid yet.

Section Top
- Subsection
-- Exhibit

And it all works with expanding menus too.

Sasz / 2012-05-02 08:32:58

Guys, Pernin, looks like I continue confusing the thread, my apologies!

Vaska A / 2012-05-02 08:34:47

@sasz: @pernin: It's rather about the whole website modification, not only the certain page (then you can hide it). I mean when your website is in /Library/WebServer folder (mac). When it's done, you just copy and paste it on server. It would be useful.

No, it's not always that simple and that's not how Indexhibit works - we use a database and you can't simply copy the files to the server and have it work.

koleman / 2012-05-02 09:19:43

thank you guys! looks cool!

ogabriel / 2012-05-02 09:42:21

looks awesome.. cheers and congratulations...
looking forward to the shop (oh lord.. PLEASE.. do a simple aproach.... not an enormous e-commerce esque) and plugins..
Also, im willing to pay for it.. you guys deserve it!
congratulations...
CUDOS for yous!
Cheers from Brazil.

ivaniannoli / 2012-05-02 09:45:34

Thanks for all the work!

I just tested it from iPhone and it's doing that wonky thing where you can't view the content (it hides behind the menu) but also can't scroll the menu. Will the new version become viewable on phones?

Thanks again.

veqlargh / 2012-05-02 10:20:36

Love it! :)
when do you expect to finish shop system..

Vaska A / 2012-05-02 11:08:43

It's not being worked on at the moment - we have alot of other things to deal with first. It will be a few months. But, the blog and subscription management systems are near completion already (will not be released on launch day though).

mitch / 2012-05-02 11:15:24

Update looks great so far—great job to Vaska & the team!

One question—will the V2 allow for multiple page templates in one site? Right now everything comes from the single index.php file in the "style" folder the site uses, will we be able to assign different templates to different sections and/or pages? (this may be already there and I am missing it?)

Thanks again for the hard work and dedication—I look forward to paying you for XV2 next week!!

ND / 2012-05-02 12:04:35

cool!

ogabriel / 2012-05-02 14:15:39

Oh HAI Vaska....
you should make a thread or news with the upcoming features.

Because i know that it will be a shop, and a blog and a subscription system...
But there's more?
This responsive layout for iphones or tablets it will come with it vanilla? or its something that we will do by ourselves via custom designs/templates?

Thanx once again!

NKBV / 2012-05-02 15:01:45

GREAT WORK GUYS! THANKS VASKA, DANIEL AND THE OTHERS INVOLVED IN THIS GREAT PROJECT!

the_jil / 2012-05-02 15:07:08

sweet. fantastic!

Vaska A / 2012-05-02 15:47:41

you should make a thread or news with the upcoming features

ogabriel, perhaps you could allow me a little time to prepare things for what you see in front of you? which, does include alot of new features - many of which people don't realize yet.

;)

pepe / 2012-05-03 03:00:29

Thanks for your work!! It seems will have a lot of posibilities of customizing.

ogabriel / 2012-05-03 06:37:27

Oh Ok.

This thread has been closed, thank you.
