I believe you have to use a cookie to do this. Thus coding skills to edit the plugin are needed.
The new "Slideshow" format has it as an option (when you select "navigate: none"), would it be possible to take the appropriate lines of code from this and apply it to the "Random Image" format? My coding skills are pretty rudimentary. Thanks.
No, it's not that simple.
What you want is not so hard but somebody would definitely need to code that up. I wish I could do it right now but I'm already behind on a bunch of things for folks.
