I was wondering if it is possible to have images on the main site that link to different projects, so immediately entering the website you get a good idea of what it on it. This are either images that are already on the site or specifically made thumbnails that only appear on on the main page. ingakaren.com
I have looked around the forum but haven't found any solution to this.

Sure there is.
Edit a section, click exhibit options select Visual Index as your exhibit format and sections as your Media Source.
Also click Page options and click On under Make main page.

Now this section will show thumbnail links of the first image of each exhibit that the section contains.

But is there any way to have an image on the main page link to project but it is not an image inside the project? So basically just a special thumbnail only for the main page.

Yes. It's a simple trick...

You can attach an image to any other image. The FIRST image of an exhibit is always special and always used at the index display image. But, if you make that image 'inactive' it will not be used in the exhibit - it WILL still be used for the index display though. So, you get exactly what you are looking for...
