I have a couple questions about customizing my navigation banner (or the navigation column). I would like to change 1st the background color which I think I do in the Admin / Assets / style.css area.. but then dont want to plug in in the wrong space..

Then I would like to limit the width of the nav column when zooming in. For example on a phone screen to see images it is necessary to zoom in on the page, but the column also expands exponentially taking up all the space. Is it possible to limit the size there?

No, you change it in /ndxzsite/$theme/style.css. Don't touch things in /ndxzstudio/.

We're working on a solution for mobile - it's nearly there. If you look at the main page of our site on your mobile phone you'll see what we're planning to do.
