Cheers rickykappa, unfortunately that didn't work for some reason my #menu ul li for active links isn't affecting the live site, I can't figure out why.
On a different note is there a way of making the active link an image, such as a small arrow?

try to use firebug for firefox to better inspect your site.
the other note: not sure how you would want to make a text link become image, but yes, if you can target the active link you can style it as you like i.e. put an image as background
Thanks rickykappa, I have had a look and it seems like the active link states are happening, but behind the normal link states so they can't be seen, is this just something to do with my menu ul li active code?
