have everything installed, and have done all parts of installation notes, but can't get it to work.
Earthlink said I need to install MySQL 3.23+ which is way over my head, any ideas?
or am I making this more complicated than it needs to be?

I doubt that you can install MySQL with an Earthlink about. I think you are going to need to find some host. MySQL (and everything else you'll need) is common to many webhosts these days.
Actually, strike that...apparently they do have MySQL. But, normally your webhost (Earthlink) will install or enable that for you. You should not need to install that on your own.
