Weird problem with images

Hey guys..

I just installed indexhibit and are of course trying to make a neat site.. however, I'm having some trouble with the image uploading...

Everytime I try to upload a picture it kinda fails... It loads and everything looks good until it just shows nothing (the space where a small thumbnail should be, it just says no images), and the browse / upload button dissapears..

The weird part is that it works fine when I upload pictures taken with my cameraphone, but normal small jpg. pic's does not work (I've tried adjusting the size of them)

any help?

Are you resizing them?
"Normal" pictures...have they come straight from the camera or have they been resized in Photoshop in any way.

Images straight from cameras can, on odd occasions, cause unpredictable results because of their metadata.

Try uploading images as 'fullpx' size and see if that works.

Also, servers are all different...have different processors and RAM...if they aren't powerful enough you will get random results as well.

Be sure you have permissions on your folders as well...double check them.

Oh, and make sure that you're uploading images with the proper .jpg extension.

hey..

funny thing is the ones direct from the camera phone is ok - but the ones that have been through photoshop won't work..

I've tried uploading them fullpx and still nothing..
also checked the .jpg ending..

my server is at www.one.com - pretty big company, I suppose they should have some powerfull stuff.. (but ya never know :) )

Anyway.. I'm still pretty blank..

Makes sense to me. I never upload images bigger than 150kb to my site...and I usually tell others to do the same. Yes, 150kb. Your server might report that it can handle more, but it's not always right...there are other factors here including the quality of the server.

I have had alot of complaints, privately, about that host. Just moved a client away from them last week as they were very unhappy. Quality of service was completely unpredictable. But, I've never used their service, so I'm just going by what others say (and some things I've seen).

Work with smaller images for a bit...see how it goes.

And finally, there are times when my host is busy and uploads just won't take. I wait 10 mins and then try again.

ahh not happy to hear 'bout my host.. fortunatly I haven't had any problems.. yet.. :)

So i've tried different low quality pic's around 150 kb - and various pictures from the net works fine - but any pic I've taken myself doesen't..

Is there any way I am able to see if there some hidden permissions in my pictures? because it's only my own there seem to be problems with..

cheers

I have the 300D...no problems.

Are you sure your images are flattened (in Photohsop). You are resizing them then saving them out? RGB...etc...etc...etc...

I've seen this before...it's very frustrating. I have researched this in the past, had a client with the same problem, and we solved it by making sure they were resizing, etc., before uploading. Hours upon hours researching this, it appeared to a problem with the images and not the upload scripts.

And also, the problem was limited to certain server setups. What that consisted of I never really knew. You are the first to mention this problem here...even though I've seen it before.

What would you say is the best way of resizing a pic in PS ?

If it is a 4-5 mb picture - what is the ideal way of resizing it, so it doesn't loose too much quality..

well it took my a few experiments, but I reinstalled Photoshop on my computer..

then I changed the imagesize and saving for web and devices..

I guess there was some config problem with my ps, that it didn't really resizing the images..

anyway.. thanks for the help :)

Hi Vaska

simple question a bit related with the thread : are images extensions case sensitive ??

-> IMG_0414.JPG does not work (file straight out from the camera, reduced in PS then saved)
-> IMG_0414-large.jpg works (reduced and renamed after neat export in PS -'save for the web')

Do you confirm ? to be sure…

Thanks

(btw : i'm a new user of indexhibit. discovering slowly, but already in love with in love with the interface. Good work.)

It should not be case sensitive, but some sever setup might be... Another thing I've experienced with jpeg is the use of "progressive jpeg" setting that doesn't play well in certain cases.

The other thing often mentionned by Vaska in other threads (and I think this is your case) is the meta data inserted in the jpeg by the camera (date, geo-location and whatnot) that is not supported very well by the image processing engine (GD) on the server.

In any case, just open your files in photoshop, and re-save using the save for web like you did.
