It worked in the past? Is something not right with your new image?
yhe, it used to work just fine. I don`t believe it is a problem with a specific image, have tried it with different ones..

Small images?
I bet the actual images are uploading but because the server is overloaded it can't process/resize the images. Check the gimgs folder to see if the actual images are uploading...
But there is a lot of free space on the server.
Could it be because my site is not on the root folder?
Sorry, by overloaded I meant oversold - meaning it has too many users on it and it doesn't have the power it did the day you purchased the service. This is really common for shared hosting setups.
Check to see if the uploaded images are in the gimgs folders...
