if i select 'off' on the 'Make main page' on the Main section whatever i click after redirects to an error 404 of page not found

You need to have a proper domain name before it will work.

sorry about my ignorance about this, i'm a very beginner. but if i want to work on my new website on indexhibit without going offline with the old one which is connected to the proper domain name how can i do that?
nothing will work unless I switch to it?

Just install it to a folder on your existing site (with real domain) and then move it to the root when you are done.
