Google - 'Index of /files/gimgs'

Kaka / 2009-05-08 10:52:43

Hi,

I recently installed Indexhibit and am currently working on my site.
I just did a google search on my name and along with my main page showing up in the google search it also shows the following link. Index of /files/gimgs - which when clicked on shows all my images and stuff. How can I hide this info?

:)

Put it in a shoebox under your bed.

Kaka / 2009-05-08 10:55:11

There isn't any room left under my bed. :)

Vaska A / 2009-05-08 10:56:09

Ok...I was kidding...don't get mad. Haha...

;)

Make a file called 'robots.txt' and put it in the root of your site. Then put this code in it and it should do the trick...

  1. User-agent: *
  2. Disallow: /files/
  3. Disallow: /files/gimgs/

I'm not sure if you need the second rule but it couldn't hurt.

I just added this to the frequently asked questions as well...it's a good one that was never added in the past.

Maybe you should clean out under your bed before you build your website?

;)

Kaka / 2009-05-08 11:12:12

I'm sure it's a schoolboy error on my part but it doesn't seem to work. :(

...some things i'll never throw away.

Vaska A / 2009-05-08 11:14:28

Eh? But, how can you tell it doesn't work? Are you Google?

Haha...

It works...but it takes time for Google to un-index things. You will have to wait a bit for that. You can try the Google Webmaster tools and see if you can expedite things but I'm not sure if that works with images.

So...be patient...it will work eventually but it could even take a month or more...

Kaka / 2009-05-08 11:16:52

Ah, I see...lol.

Google really should be keeping up with me, losers.

Thank you for your help. :)

Vaska A / 2009-05-08 11:20:39

Yeah, what has Google ever done for us. Yeah...

Oh wait...

;)

Kaka, also you would like to see your htaccess file because your webhost is allowing listing of directories by deffault and this is a feature I wouldn't want activated by default ....
;-)

An advice so that your files folders can not be listed is to add an empty file called index.html to every folder.

dyterdyter / 2010-05-07 01:29:28

I sleep in a loft bed, cant hide ANYTHING under it. Any script for that?

Vaska A / 2010-05-07 02:34:25

Did you read the thread? Answer is above...

emmasymons / 2011-01-10 17:36:13

Hello I have the same problem, I think I've followed the instructions right, did things work out for you Kaka? sorry I just know i'm not the best at these things and worry I could wait a while and still have done it wrong! no space under my bed either, theres even stuff piled on top of it at the mo! thanks Vaska for the instructions (i called my file robot as suggested!!)

emmasymons / 2011-01-10 17:46:37

ignore that i'm already realising my errors! to start with calling the file robot and not robots.txt....maybe it took me writing this to realise haha sorry im new to all this

khashayar / 2011-04-11 13:02:37

i've put the robots.txt file into the /public_html folder which i know as root folder. but i still can access /files/gimgs address. anything i've done wrong?

Vaska A / 2011-04-11 13:04:47

No, that's right. You will still see it but Google will stop looking and indexing the folder - which was the whole point.

khashayar / 2011-04-11 13:13:34

i see. but how can i prevent other people of seeing it?

Vaska A / 2011-04-11 13:15:49

You can't really - they are on the web and you need those images for your site.

Just put blank index.html files in those folders and nobody will be able to see what's in the folders.

But, people viewing your site will still be able to find the links to your images...this is how the web works.

khashayar / 2011-04-11 13:17:35

yes you're right. i just was curious about it. thank you Vaska A .

s / 2011-06-19 08:06:01

how do I make a file called 'robots.txt' and where is the root of my site.

s / 2011-06-19 08:12:13

once/if i achieve this, will those files always be available to the public, even when they are not currently on my site and i removed them months ago?

This thread has been closed, thank you.
