Hi all,
if somebody else is interested, I've managed to customize the Horizontal plugin adding a scrolling function, prev / next navigation and clickable index list.
So far I've validated it and checked with a few screensizes, ff, ie7, Safari and it seems ok.
There is also a demo page here with further informations and download. ;-)

Hi Ricky... Thanks for experimenting and posting your discoveries.

I'm wondering whether any of this might be useful on my site (I'm using horizontal galleries). I'm on a mac, and navigating horizontal galleries is a breeze using the scrollball on the mighty mouse (except the ****ing thing is always gummed up).

Are horizontal galleries a real bind for people using a regular mouse with a scroll-wheel?

Hi Richard - thanks again for your time ;-)
Besides being scrollable with mouse scroll-wheel (which btw is an option I'm not using myself!), that example page can be browsed both logically and naturally through clicks and mouse over - also if the user is on a mac...
I assume there are countless combinations of browsers/os/screens/users out there, so as a general rule I try to make my pages useful for most of them.
I see many "beautiful" websites that are so if you watch in a huge screen, if you have the last plugin/flash/whatever, if ... - otherwise they don't show or they look weird.
Personally I don't see a website as something to "enjoy" exclusively for the webdesigner and/or owner/client, but rather as a tool to use: the widest the better...
I wonder: am I lonely to think like that?

My personal favourite of scroll function would be this! I think, right now most of the horizontal scroll is only half way achieving the ideal function. I wonder if this function achievable with some more tweaking; or if it's a totally different animal all together?!

On a lesser scale, this is equally awesome as well. Could some tweak on the horizontal scroll achieve that?

I loved the horizontal scroll but yet to find a practical reason for my site.

Hi Mike - they are both heavily jquery dependant, while the first doesn't work well with small screens, the second one in the other hand is using the same thw system I'm using.
I find both sites too much fancy, for my taste of course, after the first "surprise" is there an advantage for the user?
imho the "look" should be at the content service...

True, that's the reason why I'm still sticking to the KISS philosophy for my website. The content matters, not the garnishing.

further experimenting on this format here.
Don't know yet if it's ok with safari, if anyone there can check it out or have any comment I'd appreciate it.
thanx! ;-)

@ericamattos - oh, well... I'd also like to know if it scrolls with chrome! I didn't test it... is there somebody who can tell?
however, the scrolling function is controlled by the thw.js which - as far as I know - was tested also with chrome... do you have an url to see what's going on?

It doesn't… the "next" function works, not the scroll on hover.
Chrome on Mac.

In your site and in a test that I made is not working just the scroll (Chrome on Windows). But I look for the site from the original script here, dowloaded the zip, and in the example on the zip the scroll worked in Chrome... So I guess is a minor thing in the plugin itself...

Thanks for this plug-in. I've used it on my website (portraits) linklink. Somehow the last picture ends up under the first instead of last in row. Any help/tips/suggestions?

Hello Ricky,

Thank you so much for this. :)

I'm having trouble getting the menu to show up. Additionally, on the website, I can't get the thw.js download to work - is this related?

Here is where I am trying it -

Character Page

Thanks!

Nevermind - I didn't have the right exhibition format set, haha. Except now it doesn't seem like my site is wide enough to compensate all of my images... hopefully there's a way to fix that, will keep trying. Thanks so much. :)

@ntkufreak - I'm not sure at which stage you're now in your editing, so far I'd say you're having trouble with the plugin, you should compare the code resulting form your page and the original.
if you're not using the scroll nav you should erase
<div class='nav_scroll'>
(or close it! </div>)
also check that http://samgauss.com/ndxz-studio/site/js/thw.js is not there...

I'm having problems with the left margin. Is there a way to get rid of the large left margin without screwing up the scrolling? I've tried changing the 250px in the CSS to 0 px, but every time it messes with the location of the images whenever you click the nav buttons.

Oh, and also I was wondering: is it possible to have captions span the entire width of the image instead of just part of the way?

As you can see on my site, the captions only go about half way across the image.

hi, both questions have to do with css and how you want your page to behave. you must edit the plugin, towards the bottom you'll find the dynamic css.
easier to answer q#2:
#img-container .captioning .caption { margin: .3em 0 0 50px; width: 100%;}
q#1: the short answer is: change every 250px value to whatever you want, i.e. 50px and you're done.
the long answer: if you do that when you scroll with < | > you'll see that the next/prev image will fall behind the menu (which is normally 215px wide). so the fine tuning is up to you
;-)
